July 12, 2012

We had another great meeting with Lori Bibeau filling in as Sergeant-at-Arms calling the meeting to order & leading us in the pledge of allegiance. 

The Toastmaster was Peter Hazlet and the theme was “Summertime”. The word of the day, which was used frequently, was “vacation”.

Inspirator Anne Tacznosky asked us to close our eyes, imagine ourselves at a very young age, hugging someone tightly. When she told us to open our eyes she asked “What can be more inspiring than to be loved”. Great job, Anne!

Our first speaker, Alan Swartz told us about herbicide resistant weeds and how to counteract them. Weeds, just like bugs and bacteria, can become resistant to herbicides over time and the best way to counteract them is to use different types of herbicides and to make better choices in weed control.

Second speaker Kathy Fortune presented us with the type of sermon she would deliver if she was a minister. Her purpose was to adapt a play for interpretive reading, a job she did quite well by posing as a young Jesus being questioned at the temple. She also informed us that Bathsheba was named that because she liked to take baths.

Table Topics was presented by Connie Akins. Asked to cover at the last minute, she posed some great questions to our Table Topics participants. Participants were Diane Nuss, Lori Bibeau, and our two guests: Leo Chen and Cliff Long.

General Evaluator Sherry Thomas noted that the meeting started on time and Toastmaster Pete kept things moving smoothly. She also had some great suggestions such as late comers waiting until the speaker is done speaking before entering and placing baskets on the tables for collecting the ballots.

First evaluator Deborah Frauenfelder (filled in for Deneen Stone, who was at home taking care of a sick child) noted how Alan made something as technical as herbicides interesting. He broke it all up in to modes and used handouts to help us follow along. She did suggest that he could start it out with a story to make it more interesting, but he was very effective in his presentation. 

Second Evaluator Felicia Arambula was impressed with Kathy’s costume and she spoke with a lot of emotion. She suggested a little more variation between the characters by concentrating on voice variations, but it was a very effective and humorous speech.

Ah counter Dale Jenkel kept track of the “ahs & ums” while Grammarian Connie Akins kept track of our grammar. Tom Marrs was our quizmaster, checking our listening skills.

We had another great meeting with Toastmaster Margaret Seyer calling the meeting to order. Sergeant-at-Arms Danae Deal leading us in the pledge of allegiance

The theme was the Olympics and athleticism was the word of the day.

Inspirator Deborah Frauenfelder urged us to find out where we are on the educational path with Toastmasters and share it with our VP of Education, Dale Jenkel. This way we can set our goals for the coming year and develop a plan to reach them.

First speaker Mauricio Cortes told us more about the financial industry and his plans to start his own business. His financial advisor role would focus on the needs of the investor, not the financial advisor.

Second speaker Marcy Brack entertained us with an incredible tale of love, divorce, and shared custody of a son. It was a tragically funny story with a great ending with her son developing some of the great artistic skills of his dad.

Third speaker Kathy Fortune left us laughing telling us about working in her office in Arvada, going to Franklin Covey, buying $400 dollars worth of books, only to have them thrown out. She became a “dumpster diver’ in a successful effort to find them, with the aid of the Arvada police. She told us seeing an African-American in Arvada is like seeing a UFO.

Table Topics was presented by Deneen Stone. Using cards like they do in the Olympics for scoring, table topics were chosen by selecting a letter or number and then answering the question.
Table Topics athletes included Kreg Lyles, guest Zelimir Adamic, and guest Jason Lee.

General Evaluator Pete Hazlet noted that the meeting got off to a bit of a late start, but Toastmaster Margaret kept things moving smoothly. He also noted Deneen’s creative method for Table Topics.

First evaluator Joel Weismann noted how informative Mauricio’s speech was and how he was looking forward to learning more.
Second Evaluator David Bounds remarked on Marcy’s story telling ability. She made the story sound so real and had a great many great lines, including “you can take someone out of Jersey, but you can’t take Jersey out of someone”.

Third Evaluator Dale Jenkel explained the sandwich approach and used it for Kathy Fortune’s evaluation. She, too, had a great line: “Seeing an African-American in Arvada is like seeing a UFO”.

It was a dark and dreadfully hot night, but inside Colorado Community Church it was cool and comfortable as speakers lit up the night.

Sgt at Arms Dale Jenkel started us off with the pledge of allegiance

The Toastmaster was Lee Johnson
The word of the day was jingoism – noun, extreme devotion to a belief or nation. 
The theme “Patriotism”

Inspiration was provided by Dale Jenkel, who told us to inhale confidence and exhale fear. He then turned the meeting back over to Toastmaster Lee Johnson.

First speaker Danae Deal told us about meeting two runaways while on a business trip to Salida. They were hitchhiking cross-country to a Rainbow People gathering and wove it into a story about the time she & a friend had run away. She knew what they were going through, so she fed them and got them a room for the night and reminded us we all need to see rain to see a rainbow.

Speaker two Alan Swartz gave an impromptu speech explaining how he got into Toastmasters and how much it’s grown over the years. He provided a lot of details and had enough information for several more speeches on Toastmasters.

Third speaker Deneen Stone, in her second speech “It’s All About Me” rocked the house telling us we all have a purpose in life and we need to enjoy life and enjoy who we are.

Kreg Lyles provided excellent feedback to Danae, noting how she wove together part of her life story with that of the runaways. This was his first time in the role of evaluator!

Tom Marrs provided excellent feedback for Alan’s speech. He noted that there was a plethora of information, enough for several speeches. 

Connie Akins gave kudos to Deneen for her presentation and stage presence. She noted how Deneen didn’t refer to her notes and advised her to get the speaker’s stand out of the way.

Margaret Seyer was our Table Topics Master. Participants included two guests: Ricardo Hernandez and Dave Pollack. Margaret took a question, as well as George Maestas.

Best Evaluator: This award went to Connie Akins, but she awarded it to Kreg Lyles because she knows how challenging it is evaluate the first time!
Best Speaker: Deneen Stone

What a great meeting we had Thursday night! We were a little late starting, but there was ALL that great food! The theme was Carnivale, Frog Boy tickets for sale.

We were led in the Pledge of Allegiance by Toastmaster Cybele Antenow, followed by Immediate Past President Tom Marrs recognizing the hard work of last season’s club officers. They were then discharged by Deborah Frauenfelder, who then swore in the new club officers.

Many, many awards were awarded for both accomplishments and hard work this past year. It was also noted that Simply Speaking is the home of the governors, with Alan Swartz, Deborah, Frauenfelder, Darryle Brown, and David Bounds.

Entertainment started with a rousing, humours song filled with Toasties sung by guests Elenora & Betty

Joel Weismann in “A Week to Remember” with his story of what he went through in his body-builder competitions. 

We were amazed by Maura Thompson as she went down the list of states in “State Race: in 19 seconds! 

GiGi De Gala showed us how she controlled her fear when giving speeches, especially during a contest. 

Danae Deal did a skit humours called Already Been Chewed that showcased her ability to do physical comedy.
Connie Akins filled us in on what women really mean when they say “You know dear…” 

 Kreg Lyles thrilled us with his impersonation of Bullwinkle. 

David Bounds, Marcy Brack, and guest Larry Scantland entertained us with a Barbie and Ken reunion with GI Joe.

Theme: Finish the Race
Word of the day was persevere – to maintain a purpose in spite of difficulty, obstacles, or discouragement; continue steadfastly.  

What a great meeting we had Thursday night! We were a little late at the starting gate, but Toastmaster Tom Marrs kept the meeting moving at a steady pace. Dale Jenkel called the meeting to order, reminded us to turn off our wireless appendages, and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Inspirator Felecia Arambula inspired us by getting us up on our feet and moving and getting our blood flowing. What a great way to start a meeting!

Speaker #1, Lois Kamga introduced us to Angels and Doves Foundation, a non-profit organization he is vice president, of that works to bring fresh water, provide education, and eliminates gender disparities in poor and rural areas of Cameroon. Fresh, clean water is not available in the rural areas, education is lacking, and women have little or no education. Check them out at www.angelsanddoves.org.

Speaker #2, Marcy Brack kept us laughing with stories of her mother’s favorite tools – a shoe and a butter knife. The shoe came in very handy driving a nail to hang pictures or crack open nuts. The butter knife was great as a substitute for a screwdriver. 

Speaker #3, Kathy Fortune told us of her weekend in Chicago several years ago when she met a celebrity her friend Gloria described as a great “hunk of dark chocolate” , who turned out to be Mohammed Ali. She shared some of her pictures with him, including one of the last ones he autographed.

Table Topics Masters Connie Akins brought several of us up to participate in Table Topics. We had a list of words we had to use, including the word of the day – persevere. Participants included guests Ricardo, Vibi, and Davorka, as well as members Mauricio, Diane, David, and Pete. We weaved quite a story to entertain the audience.

General Evaluator Darryle Brown introduced the evaluators, as well as evaluated the meeting. He evaluated the evaluators, noting how they all skillfully used the sandwich approach in their own personal styles. 

Timekeeper Anne Tacznosky, (in her first role as timekeeper) reported that all speakers and table topics participants were in time. Great job as a first-time timer!

Evaluator #1, Cybele Antenow provided feedback for Lois. His illustrations using bullet points and pictures of Cameroon supported his message of the work his organization does.

Evaluator #2, Joel Weismann gave great feedback to Marcy on her speech. This was his first time as an evaluator and he now has an idea for new tools for around the house.

David Bounds was evaluator #3 for Kathy Fortune. In his own comical way he provided feedback and noted her terms “great hunk of dark chocolate” and “Dark Gable”

Ah Counter Kreg Lyles and Grammarian Deborah Frauenfelder did a great job of counting our filler words and language usage. Quizmaster Sherry Thomas tested our listening skills, and our memory.

Tom Marrs presented the awards before making a few announcements.

Meeting minutes from May 24, 2012
Theme "Paying Tribute to the Armed Forces"
Word of the Day: Sacrifice


What a great meeting we had.  This was the first time Danae Deal served as the Toastmaster, and what a wonderful job she did. We  had Joan Janis from Cherry Creek Toastmasters as our esteemed guest.

There were a few last minute substitutions and role filling, but that didn't slow us down.  Margaret Seyer led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by our inspirator, Cybele Antenow.  Cybele asked us what Toastmasters means to each of us.  She chose oppurtunity as we make a promise to ourselves to become better speakers, better leaders, take ourselves to new levels.

Maura Thompson kept us laughing with her dream speech of winning the Division 26 speech contest, helping Obama win a second term and marrying him.

Speaker #2 was Cybele Antenow, relating the worries and concerns of any parent when their child learns to drive.  Watch out for anyone turning left on a red light from the right turn lane!  It could be her daughter!

Our third speaker, Darryle Brown, gave a toast to Ian Humphrey, Gigi DeGala, and Kathy Fortune for their successes in some of the speech contests.  He especially recognized Deborah Frauenfelder, now a Division Governor for Toastmasters. Congratulations, Deborah!

Deborah Frauenfelder payed tribute to those who have served in the military and using that theme for the Table Topics questions. 

We had some great evaluations from Kathy Fortune, Will Osagiede, and David Bounds. General Evaluator Tom Marrs mentioned that the meeting started on time and roles were filled, but there will be an effort to! inform people sooner to sign up for roles a couple weeks in advance so people have ample time to sign up.
